Antique Victorian Snake Necklace 14k Gold Garnets w Garnet Pendant Drop (6872)

Measurements: Length is approximately 14 1/2 inches (37cm) with an additional drop of approximately 7/8 inch (slightly more than2cm). Description : Wonderful example of snake jewelry, so popular during the reign of Queen Victoria. The necklace will sit on the nape of the neck wo that the snake is wonderfully positioned to best advantage and the matching drop adding drama and interest. The'body' of the snake is made of luxuriously slinky, overlapping sections, tapering towards the extremities. The head is exceptionally well made with great detail.

The top of the head is collete-set with a pair of glowing purple red rhodolite garnets, matched by smaller, round garnets set in the popping up eyes. The surface of the head is very finely detailed with various engraved and matt designs and scrolling nostrils and swirling coiled foliage around the eyes. One can almost feel the breath of a dragon - it seems quite alive. The underside of the head, hidden from view, is no less detailed, with a beautiful engraved design. This reflects the care, effort and time that the craftsman took in making this luxurious jewel.

The wide-open mouth contains a gold loop that suspends a drop, beginning with an arching leaf and containing a garnet that reflects and matches those on the head. The loops offer a good amount of flexibility so that the drop can move independently of the head.

The clasp is on the side of the head, making it conveniently easy for a woman to dress herself in the absence of a full-time maid to help her. Clasp simply clicks securely closed. Gems were tested and confirmed as garnets with Presidium Duotester. Marks and Metal: No marks found.

Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity. At least 14ct (and probably 15ct). Hand engraved numbers on the back of the drop are probably inventory marks of a previous owner.
